Varmint Match
The Varmint Match is held on the fourth Sunday of odd numbered months at the Sierra Vista Shooting range. The goal of this match is to have fun while developing long range shooting skills. The match is open to all shooters of all ages. Shooters under the age of sixteen must be accompanied by an adult.
The Range
There are two ranges. Each range has five stations with one to three varmints plus a swinger located at each station. There is always a total of ten varmints on each range. Shooters are allowed one shot at each swinger. These swinger shots are optional and are not scored.
The shooting distances in yards are as follows:
Station Left Range Right Range
1 210 200
2 270 250
3 310 315
4 350 360
5 420 400
The Match
Signup begins at 8:30 AM and the match starts at 9:00 AM. There is $8.00 fee for each shooter. During signup, shooters can take a few shots at the swingers to check their rifles at the distances they will be shooting during the match. The order in which each person shoots is determined by drawing lots. Once the match starts, a spotter and scorer will be at each bench to assist the shooter.
Course of Fire
1. The Range Safety Officer (RSO) will ask if the shooters are ready.
2. The shooters will be told they have ten minutes to finish, and then told to load and commence firing.
3. The swinger at each station may, at the shooters option, be shot once. Swingers are not scored.
4. The varmints are shot in the following order: Stations one to five and varmints left to right.
5. Shooters are allowed only one shot per varmint. Any varmint shot out of order is scored as a miss.
6. After ten minutes the RSO will call a cease fire.
